NZ passport online photo checker keeps rejecting your photo? The real spec

The New Zealand passport online photo checker rejects photos that miss the DIA digital spec: a portrait-orientation JPG or JPEG between 900 x 1200 and 4500 x 6000 pixels in a 3:4 width-to-height ratio, at least 250 KB, less than 6 months old, on a plain, light-colored background that is not pure white, with no shadows and no filters. Rejection is normal, not rare: Internal Affairs assessed nearly 50,000 photos in one month of 2023 and rejected 19 percent. Check the geometry and background first; those two cause most failures.

The digital spec, precisely

Format: JPG or JPEG only, and scans of film photos are not accepted for the online application. Dimensions: between 900 x 1200 and 4500 x 6000 pixels, portrait orientation, 3:4 width-to-height ratio. File size: at least 250 KB; published caps range from 5 MB to 10 MB, so staying under 5 MB keeps you inside every quoted limit. Age: under 6 months. A landscape crop or a square crop fails immediately, which is the most common self-inflicted rejection.

Not white: the background rule that surprises everyone

Unlike the US and most visa systems, New Zealand wants a plain, light-colored background and guidance is explicit not to use white: light blue, grey or cream are the recommended choices. Travelers reuse a white-background photo from another application and the checker flags it. There must be no shadows on the face or the background, and no filters or editing that alters your appearance.

One more thing the checker cannot promise: passing it is not final approval. Internal Affairs has said the online checker is deliberately less strict than the manual review, because a passports officer makes the final call so the photo works with airport facial recognition. A pass online plus a rejection later usually means lighting or background, so get those right up front. The free checker below measures your file against the NZ spec before you submit. If you're renewing and want to know how long the whole application takes once the photo is sorted, see /guides/new-zealand-passport-renewal-2026-processing-time.

Frequently asked questions

What are the exact pixel requirements for the NZ passport photo upload?

Between 900 x 1200 and 4500 x 6000 pixels, portrait orientation in a 3:4 ratio, JPG or JPEG, at least 250 KB, under 6 months old.

Should the NZ passport photo background be white?

No. New Zealand wants a plain, light-colored background and guidance says not to use white; light blue, grey or cream are recommended.

The online checker passed my photo but my application was rejected. Why?

The online checker is deliberately less strict than the manual review by a passports officer. Shadows, uneven lighting and background issues are common reasons a checker-passed photo still fails.

How often are NZ passport photos rejected?

Internal Affairs reported rejecting 9,497 of nearly 50,000 photos assessed in April 2023, about 19 percent, with similar rates in the surrounding months.

My photo looks fine but the checker still rejects it. Could it be my phone's file format?

Possibly. Applicants in NZ tech forums report that iPhone photos saved in HEIC (the 'High Efficiency' camera setting) can cause silent upload problems, and switching the camera to 'Most Compatible' (JPEG) before shooting has resolved rejections for some. A photo with unusual orientation metadata has also been reported to trip the checker even when it displays upright. These are community-reported workarounds, not confirmed DIA rules, but worth trying if the geometry and background both check out and the rejection has no clear reason.
