Compliant Passport Photo

Can you wear glasses in a US passport photo?

No. You cannot wear glasses in a US passport photo. Since November 2016, the US Department of State has not accepted photos with eyeglasses, except in rare cases with a signed doctor's statement that they cannot be removed for medical reasons. If you must wear them medically, there must be no glare and your eyes must be fully visible.

Why glasses aren't allowed

Glare on the lenses and frames covering the eyes caused a high rejection rate, so the State Department removed glasses from acceptable photos in 2016. Simply taking your glasses off for the photo is the easiest way to comply.

The medical exception

If you genuinely cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, you must submit a signed statement from a doctor. Even then, the frames must not cover your eyes, and there must be no glare or reflection on the lenses.
