US visa photo requirements for applicants from India

For a US visa from India the photo must meet the US 2 x 2 inch specification, and the DS-160 upload adds digital limits: a square JPEG between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels, under 240 KB. Indian studios commonly hand over 35 x 45 mm or heavily retouched files, both of which fail. One more thing worth knowing: in recent DV lottery years, natives of India have not been eligible to enter due to high immigration volumes, though eligibility resets annually and you may qualify through a spouse born in an eligible country, or in limited cases through a parent, subject to the program's chargeability conditions.

The DS-160 upload, from India specifically

Consulates in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata all work from the same DS-160 photo. The upload fails most often on file size (phone photos are far over 240 KB) and on retouching, which studios apply by default. Resize to the pixel spec first, then compress, and use an unedited original.

Interview photo vs upload

Some applicants also carry printed 2 x 2 inch photos to the interview. The prints must match the uploaded photo's session; a mismatched or older print raises questions. One fresh compliant photo covers both uses.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indians enter the DV green card lottery?

In recent years natives of India have not been eligible because India exceeds the immigration threshold, but eligibility is re-announced each year, and you may be able to claim a spouse's eligible country of birth, or a parent's in limited residency-related cases. Check the current official instructions.

Why does the DS-160 keep rejecting my photo from India?

Usually file size over 240 KB, non-square dimensions, or studio retouching. Use an unedited photo, crop square between 600 and 1200 pixels, and compress under the cap.
