Where AI-edited passport photos stand in 2026: US, UK and Canada all reject them

The US State Department, UK HMPO and Canada IRCC all reject passport photos that have been digitally altered or AI-generated. That includes background replacement, skin smoothing, and app 'beautify' filters, which is exactly what most photo apps sell.

The practical consequence: an app that 'fixes' your photo by swapping the background or cleaning up your face is producing a file that examiners are trained to flag. The tell-tale signs are unnaturally uniform backgrounds and smoothed skin texture.

The safe workflow is the boring one. Take a real photo against a plain wall in even light, then measure it against the official spec without touching the pixels. If the framing is wrong, retake it rather than editing it.
