Canada online passport renewal: the photo rules that get applications refused

Canada's official photo page is blunt: 'We'll refuse your application if your photos don't meet our requirements.' For online renewals the rules are stricter than most countries: the photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer (selfies and scans of prints are rejected), and the digital file must be a JPEG in portrait 3:2 ratio, between 1800 x 1200 and 4500 x 3000 pixels, 200 KB to 5 MB, unedited, taken within the last six months. The upload form also asks for the studio's name, address, and the date the photo was taken, so collect those at the studio.

The rule people miss: a photographer must take it

Unlike the US online renewal, Canada requires the photo to be taken in person by a commercial photographer, and the online form collects the studio name, address, and photo date. A phone selfie, however compliant it looks, does not satisfy the requirement, and a scan of a printed photo is explicitly rejected.

Ask the studio for the digital original: JPEG or JPG, portrait orientation with a 3 to 2 ratio, between 1800 x 1200 and 4500 x 3000 pixels, between 200 KB and 5 MB, no editing of any kind, taken within the last six months. Photos with shadows, glare, red-eye or red-eye corrections, sunglasses, or tinted prescription lenses are refused.
