US online passport renewal photo: the 54 KB rule and upload spec

The US online passport renewal photo upload accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF files between 54 KB and 10 MB. The photo must be in color, taken within the last six months, and must be the original unedited digital photo: no filters, no digital changes, and no scans or photos of printed pictures. If your upload fails, the file is usually either under the unusual 54 KB minimum after compression, or a scan or screenshot rather than an original.

Measured against the official United States passport spec: head size, eye line, background, brightness and file limits. We never edit your photo.

Use a clear, front-facing photo against a plain white wall in even light. We measure and crop it. We never edit the pixels you submit.

The 54 KB minimum catches compressed files

Most portals only have maximums; the renewal tool also enforces a 54 KB floor. Files fall under it when a messaging app, email resize, or aggressive export compressed the photo. Always upload the original file from the camera, not one that has been through WhatsApp or a 'small size' email option. If you only have a compressed copy, retake the photo rather than upscaling it.

Original means original

The State Department's instructions require the original, unedited photo: no filters, no beauty modes, no background cleanup, and no scanning a printed photo. Screenshots fail for the same reason. This mirrors the broader 2026 rule that digitally altered photos are grounds for rejection, and it is the reason our checker never edits your photo, only measures it.

The photo rules behind the file rules

Beyond the file, the usual US passport photo content rules apply: plain white or off-white background, neutral expression, no glasses, head between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches in the frame, taken in the last six months. Check all of it free below before you start the renewal, because a rejected photo stalls the whole application.

Frequently asked questions

What file types does the US online passport renewal accept?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF, in color, between 54 KB and 10 MB.

Why is my renewal photo upload failing at the file step?

The two usual reasons: the file is under the 54 KB minimum because something compressed it, or it is a scan, screenshot, or edited copy rather than the original photo from the camera.

Can I use a photo of my printed passport photo?

No. The tool requires the original digital photo. Photos of prints and scanned prints are explicitly not accepted.
