Can a DS-160 photo be black and white?
No. The DS-160 requires a color photograph. Black and white, grayscale, or sepia-toned photos are not accepted for US visa applications, even if every other requirement (size, background, framing) is met.
Why color is required
US visa and passport photos are used for facial recognition and identity matching, which relies on natural skin tone and color information. A black and white or filtered photo removes that information, so it fails the check regardless of composition.
What to check on your phone
Modern phones sometimes apply a black and white or vintage filter by default in certain camera modes, or a photo can be saved from an editing app in grayscale without it being obvious on a small screen. Confirm the photo is standard color before uploading, and avoid any filter or editing app entirely, since edited photos are a separate rejection reason since January 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Will a sepia or vintage-filter photo be accepted for DS-160?
No. Any photo that isn't a true, unfiltered color photograph is rejected, including sepia, black and white, and other color-filter effects.
Does converting an old black and white photo to color work?
No. Colorized or AI-recolored photos count as edited images, which are a rejection reason on their own since January 2026. Take a new color photo instead.
