DS-160 photo rejected: every reason and its fix
The DS-160 photo uploader rejects photos for a short list of reasons: file over 240 KB, dimensions not square or outside 600 to 1200 pixels, wrong format (JPEG only), background not plain and light, head too small or too large in frame, shadows, glasses, or signs of digital editing. Each has a specific fix, and the wrong response is forcing the file through with an editing app, since altered photos are rejected later even when the upload succeeds.

Measured against the official United States visa spec: head size, eye line, background, brightness and file limits. We never edit your photo.
Use a clear, front-facing photo against a plain white wall in even light. We measure and crop it. We never edit the pixels you submit.
Map the error to the fix
File too large: resize to 600 pixels square first, then compress. Wrong dimensions: crop natively square, do not pad with borders. Background: reshoot in front of a plain white wall in even light rather than whitening in software. Head size: stand closer or crop tighter so the head fills 50 to 69 percent. Quality warnings: use the original camera file, not a screenshot or a scan of a print.
Passing the uploader is not the finish line
The DS-160 tool checks file properties; consular officers check the photo. An edited image that slips through the upload gets flagged at processing or the interview. The photo that works is a real, unedited, correctly framed shot, verified against the spec before upload.
Frequently asked questions
The DS-160 accepted my photo. Am I safe?
Mostly, if the photo is real and unedited. The uploader validates file properties; humans validate the photo itself later, and editing is the thing that surfaces then.
Can I use the same DS-160 photo for my whole family's applications?
Each applicant needs their own photo meeting the spec. The digital limits are identical for everyone, including children.
