Passport photo vs visa photo: what's the difference?
For the US they share the same physical spec: 2 x 2 inches, head 1 to 1 3/8 inches, plain white background, taken in the last 6 months. The differences are digital. Visa applications like the DS-160 are uploaded online with hard limits: a square JPEG, 600 to 1200 pixels, under 240 KB, and the portal rejects files that miss any of them. Other countries' visas each have their own specs entirely.
Where people get caught
A photo that sails through a passport application fails a DS-160 upload on file size alone: phone photos are 10x over the 240 KB cap. Resize to the pixel spec first, then compress under the cap. Doing it in the other order wrecks quality.
Non-US visas are a different spec
A Schengen visa wants 35 x 45 mm with a neutral expression; India uses 51 x 51 mm; China wants 33 x 48 mm with both ears visible and a file between 40 and 120 KB. Never assume the US photo works elsewhere; check the exact document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my passport photo for the DS-160?
The same image, yes, if it is under 6 months old, but the digital file must be a square JPEG at 600 to 1200 pixels and under 240 KB, which usually means resizing and compressing first.
Is the green card photo the same too?
US green card photos follow the same 2 x 2 inch physical spec. Check the specific USCIS form's digital requirements when uploading.
